A good leather jacket can stay with you for years. It doesn't need much, just a few gentle habits. Always check the care instructions that come with your jacket first, since they come before any general advice.
Everyday cleaning
- Brush off dust and dirt with a soft, dry cloth.
- For light marks, wipe gently with a soft cloth that's only slightly damp, then let the jacket air dry.
- Avoid harsh household cleaners, detergents, and solvents.
- Test any leather product on a small, hidden spot first.
Conditioning
Leather can dry out over time. Now and then, especially if it starts to feel dry or stiff, apply a thin layer of a leather conditioner with a soft cloth, let it soak in, and buff off any extra. A little goes a long way.
If it gets wet
- Blot off water with a soft towel. Don't rub.
- Hang it on a wide hanger and let it dry naturally at room temperature.
- Keep it away from heaters, hair dryers, and direct sun while it dries.
- Once dry, a light conditioning can help restore softness.
Storing your jacket
- Hang it on a wide, sturdy hanger to support the shoulders.
- Keep it somewhere cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight.
- Give it room to breathe. Skip plastic covers and use a breathable fabric cover if needed.
- Empty the pockets so they don't stretch out of shape.
